Why is it so important to stand while working?

"Sitting is the new smoking." Research has linked sitting for long periods with several health concerns. They include obesity and a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels.

But what can I do when I'm working at an office desk all day?

Well, the most obvious solution is to have an adjustable or standing desk that allows you to stand up during the day periodically.

However, here are four tips for movement instead of sitting:

  1. Be a butterfly...if possible, take your work and move to various locations throughout the day, inside and out.
  2. Have a walking meeting - can you discuss the topics while walking, either outside or maybe through the corridors inside?  
  3. Have a face-to-face conversation, walk to a colleague's desk instead of texting or picking up the phone.
  4. Give yourself excuses to walk somewhere and take small breaks often to get your body moving.
